Action Canada provides direct services to ensure access to sexual health information and abortion in Canada while advocating in Canada and globally for access to sexual rights including contraception, abortion access, comprehensive sexuality education and LGBT rights.
We are a registered Canadian charity authorized to issue Canadian charitable tax receipts.
Canada’s Syphilis rate has grown over 450% since 2001. Shocking, but not really surprising given Canada’s failure to guarantee comprehensive sexuality education “sex-ed” in every community. Most young people just go to Google for answers. Answers to questions like “Can kissing get me pregnant?”, “Can I get HIV from sharing a water fountain?” or “Do abortions cause breast cancer?” You & I know the answer is a firm no, but
far too often these searches lead young people to websites full of misinformation or worse, judgement. So we’ve launched Canada’s first fully bilingual, adamantly pro-choice & youth friendly sexual and reproductive health website. Since its launch in February 2015, we’ve had thousands of visitors. It’s a stop gap, but one that is desperately needed. But we need your donation to keep it going. Will you support SRHweek.ca?
Action Canada has a reputation for pushing hard for sexual and reproductive rights in United Nations resolutions. We know that a strong resolution in the hands of the right group of feminists is one of the most efficient ways to change laws and access to services globally. That’s why we have two world-renowned experts working in Geneva and New York to make sure sexual rights are front and center at
any UN negotiation. But it’s also why our experts rack up hefty travel bills. We send our team to train local feminist groups on how to hold their own governments accountable using the resolutions. We support these groups in developing research on their government’s implementation of human rights resolutions. We work collaboratively to hold all members the United Nations accountable. Your support can help train groups around the world to hold their governments accountable and ensure global access to sexual rights is improved.
You get the call. The clinic has an opening next week, but you’ll need to travel 350km, find a hotel, and get a couple days off work. Should cost you about $1,500. Can you cover it? Not many women can. And that’s why our Norma Scarborough Fund exists. We field calls 24-hours a day on our toll free Access Line. We help women book appointments, gather the funds to cover their trip, and offer
emotional support throughout the process. We are there to help with train tickets, hotels, and even the pads women need after an abortion. But it isn’t cheap. We need your support to help women cover these urgent costs. Please donate today.
Canada’s Muskoka Initiative to End Maternal Newborn and Child Health has a noble goal. Help moms and babies survive and thrive through pregnancy and childbirth? It’s a great idea. But thanks to ideological restrictions the program failed to reach its goal. Only 0.69% of the money was being spent on family planning, and Canada refused to pay for abortions overseas even where they were legal. The government listened to our critique and has
promised to remove ideology from the equation. But translating promises into action could take far too long. Canadians want to help end maternal mortality. So Action Canada is busy making the case in parliament, with journalists, and other decision makers. Will you help us get the word out?
For the first time in a long time the majority of Parliamentarians are required to vote pro-choice. But a sexual rights agenda for Canada means more then defeating backdoor attempts to recriminalize abortion. Our Opting for Rights campaign lays out concrete steps the new government can take. Once implemented these steps would expand access to abortion in every corner of Canada, protect sex workers from violence, lower climbing STI
rates, and support the rights of the trans community. Our plan would also help redefine Canada on the world stage as a feminist leader by addressing rampant rates of maternal mortality around the world. We are meeting often with decision makers in parliament, government ministries like Global Affairs Canada and Health Canada, journalists and professional health provider bodies. One by one we are convincing decision makers to act on our proposals.
