Press advisory: Alberta Health Minister and Reproductive Rights Experts to discuss access to abortion in Canada, barriers and possibilities, during Council of the Federation

Salon B at Chateau Lacombe, 10111 Bellamy Hill Rd NW, Edmonton, Alberta

Abortion has been legal in Canada for nearly three decades, yet many seeking the service don’t have access. In July of 2015, after one of its lengthiest drug approval processes on record, Health Canada approved the abortion pill (Mifegymiso). The pill has the potential to provide access in Canada where there is none, but barriers remain. Restrictions like the pill’s $300-$450 price tag mean it is out of reach for many, especially in rural and remote parts of Canada.

Sarah Hoffman, Alberta Health Minister; Barb Shellian, President of the Canadian Nurses Association; Sandeep Prasad, Executive Director of Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights; Denise Lambert, Program Designer for Kimamow Atoskanow Foundation; and Celia Posyniak, Executive Director of Kensington Clinic will discuss existing barriers and concrete steps toward universal access to medical abortion in Canada. The panel will be moderated by Heather Cobb, Alberta Society for the Promotion of Sexual Health President, Board of Directors.
